Top Young Adult Short Reads On Amazon

Combining the ever growing and popular young adult genre with a matter of convenience has birthed a whole new category called “young adult short reads”. This particular range of books offers some unique and quick stories. And because they aren’t a massive commitment to finish, nor are they filled with surrounding fluff like many lengthy novels, they’re an easy yet entertaining choice for a rainy day on the couch.

There’s also a real joy in finding a short book amidst a busy schedule and sometimes it’s these non-lengthy stories that get us hooked on reading in the first place, especially in modern day young adults who commonly find little to no time for reading. Though, don’t get me wrong, these books can appeal to any age group.

If this is the first you’ve heard about young adult short reads, they are essentially books based on young adult topics that include approximately 250 pages or less and they’re an attractive option when feeling sluggish or looking for entertainment that’s straight to the point.

As a self-proclaimed guru on this booming category, here are my top picks:

1. Angus, Thongs, And Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

This British classic is an excellent short read that will keep you laughing hysterically and fully immersed in Georgia’s awkwardly relatable teenage existence.

2. The Orange Houses by Paul Griffin

At only 160 pages, this book may be classified as short, but it’s chapters are certainly powerful. It eloquently covers important topics and offers a fascinating story about friendship and the coming together of unlikely misfits.

3. Pasadena by Sherri L. Smith

Pasadena is a satisfying mystery-crime read with plenty of teenage drama. This compelling story follows main character Jude as she’s left unconvinced her best friend committee suicide. Though others disagree with her beliefs, Jude is confident her best friends body found in a swimming pool was caused only by murder, and now everyone around her seems suspicious.

4. Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr

Life as a teenager is often a vulnerable and insecure period for a girl to go through and this book takes you into the depths of a coming of age story. Your heart may break reading this, but you will be completely engaged as you follow the story of a young girl who’s slut-shamed and looking to escape her past. Though her sincere spirit and ache for redemption is rather remarkable.

5. Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan

A compelling story based on true events, this book is a true voice for the LGBT community, love and young relationships, and it’s enticing writing style will keep your heart beating fast. It tells the amazing story about two teenage boys taking part in a kissing marathon to beat a Guinness World Record. Their journey encourages others at it becomes a focus for other like minded teen boys battling similar issues.

If you’re generally a fan of YA books and are looking for a short read to either pass the day or distract from a busy one, I highly suggest looking into the above list. Perhaps the ease of fewer pages will inspire you to make more time for reading or accommodate it into your daily routine. From my experience, the reprieve of a good book makes all the difference.
