Audio-books can be a great way to pass the time whether you’re walking the dog, driving to work, or just falling asleep. But if you’re anything like me, you also crave books with unique stories and engaging narrative voices that suck you into another world. Finding that perfect listen can be time-consuming and frustrating, so I’ve cut through the junk to bring you my top five best mixed genre listens. These recommendations blend the best elements of different genres. They have gripping story-lines, excellent reviews, and narrative voices that will make them hard to put down.
Set in the 1920s in New York city, Evie, a girl with mysterious powers, tracks down a serial killer. As she tracks down the killer, you’re introduced to a chorus girl trying to escape her past and a student with a jaw dropping secret. This audio book was also an Audie award nominee in the best teens category in 2013.
This series features alchemy, witches, vampires, slow-build romances, a vampire geneticist, and historical periods like the American Revolution. The newest addition to the series, Time’s Convert, follows Marcus, a surgeon turned vampire during the American Revolution. He falls for Phoebe while living in modern day Paris, and she is faced with a choice: live a mortal life or become a vampire. These books are also being made into a TV series, so you have something to look forward to after you’ve finished listening.
In this coming of Age fantasy, Georjie goes to Scotland in search of a teacher that can help her unlock her Fae powers, but she finds something much darker. Instead of finding a teacher, she discovers a mummified body in some 17th century ruins. When Georjie finds a girl in a grave on the brink of death, she discovers an ancient evil is terrorizing Scotland. She has to master her magic and break the curse before it’s too late.
The Lord of Blackwell Manor, Miles, is plagued with a curse that causes him to change into a werewolf when the full moon rises. When a botanist named Lucy ventures to that same manor to care for her sick cousin Kate, she gets more than she bargained for. She is faced with a mysterious illness, a string of murders, and an inhospitable host and starts to wonder how it’s all connected. If you were a fan of the Lunar Chronicles, then you’ll love this steampunk beauty and the beast retelling.
When murdered girls are discovered in Brinnswick with their blood drained, Sebastian is put on the case. He’s teamed up with Allin to solve the murders, but Allin is hiding a secret and a magic world that hides in the shadows.

My favorites tend to lean heavily into the fantasy genre with some thriller, historical, and sci-fi elements.
